There's never a convenient time to lose hot water. Whether you're getting ready for work or washing dishes after dinner, a cold surprise from the tap is the last thing anyone wants. The good news is that most water heater problems have clear causes — and many can be fixed the same day.

Here are the five most common reasons your water heater stops working in the Katy and Houston area:

    1. A tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse. Electric water heaters are heavy power users. If your breaker trips, the heater simply won't run. Check your panel first — if it's tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, call us. There's likely a deeper electrical issue that needs a professional.

    2. A failed heating element. Electric water heaters have two heating elements — upper and lower. If one fails, you may get warm but not hot water, or the water may run out quickly. A plumber can test both elements and replace the faulty one in under an hour.

    3. A faulty thermocouple or gas valve. Gas water heaters rely on a thermocouple to keep the pilot lit. If the thermocouple fails, the pilot goes out and the heater won't ignite. This is a common, inexpensive repair — but it requires working with gas, so leave it to a licensed professional.

    4. Sediment buildup in the tank. Gulf Coast hard water fills your tank with mineral scale over time. That scale insulates the bottom of the tank from the heating element or burner, making your heater work harder and recover slower. A professional flush can restore performance — and a water softener can prevent it from coming back.

    5. Age. The average tank water heater lasts 10–12 years in our area. If yours is older and acting up, replacement is often more cost-effective than repair — especially with today's high-efficiency options that can lower your energy bill.

If your water heater isn't performing, don't wait. We diagnose the real problem, give you an upfront price, and complete most repairs the same day. Call Obsta Plumbing at (713) 253-4810.
