The Most Common Causes
1. A worn flapper. The flapper is the rubber seal at the bottom of the tank that lifts when you flush. Over time, it warps, cracks, or collects mineral buildup from our hard water, preventing a tight seal. This is the most common cause of a running toilet — and it's an inexpensive fix.
2. A misadjusted fill valve. If the fill valve is set too high, water spills into the overflow tube continuously. A simple adjustment usually solves it, but a worn fill valve may need replacement.
3. A faulty flush valve. The flush valve is the assembly the flapper seals against. If it's cracked or corroded, water leaks past the flapper even when it's in good shape.
4. A loose or worn chain. If the chain connecting the flapper to the handle is too tight or too loose, the flapper won't seat properly.
